Nan Gong Ruoxi’s expression was calm and unquestionable, but Qin Changsheng could tell from her tone that she was not joking. He smiled bitterly to himself—indeed, the words of beautiful women were never to be trusted. It seemed that today he was destined to be a mere shield. Damn it, I even wondered why she went straight to the medicine fields without asking any questions and handed over the money. Of course, it was all a trap.

“Ruoxi is right; our relationship is indeed quite deep.”

Helplessly accepting the storage ring, Qin Changsheng cleared his throat and casually placed his hand on Nan Gong Ruoxi’s slender waist. Since they were Tao companions, a little benefit wouldn’t hurt, right?

The soft, boneless sensation immediately transmitted through his fingers. Nan Gong Ruoxi stiffened and shot him a fierce glare. This guy was truly shameless, boldly making a move!

Qin Changsheng pretended not to notice and smiled, nodding. “So you must be the Dragon Descendant, then? I've heard much about you! I am Qin Changsheng.”

As the saying goes, you don’t strike a smiling face reaching out; he had no choice but to try and defuse the killing intent from the Dragon Descendant this way.

“It’s only been a few days since we last met. When did Ruoxi get a Tao companion? Not even notifying the Elders’ Council? That way, we could have helped watch over her, to see just what kind of genius managed to win over Ruoxi.”

“I suppose he must be even more formidable than me, the Dragon Descendant?”

Dragon Descendant snorted, utterly unappreciative, his murderous intent no longer concealed.

“His cultivation is average, not even worthy of the Elders’ attention, so I didn’t mention him. Senior Brother Long, you wouldn’t trouble him, would you?” Nan Gong Ruoxi smiled lightly.

“Of course I won’t trouble him. But this Cultivation Conference is for discussing the Dao and exchanging insights. Soon, I’m sure many will want to see just how high your Tao companion’s level of cultivation is.”

Dragon Descendant stepped in front of Qin Changsheng, snorted, “Junior Brother Qin, you’d better be careful later.”

With that, he turned and left, leaving Qin Changsheng with a complicated expression. Today’s grudge was set; the upcoming Dao discussion would not be easy.

Seeing this scene, those around couldn’t help but gloat.

“Haha, poor Qin Changsheng really is unlucky—chosen as the shield by the Holy Maiden, and now targeted by the Dragon Descendant.”

“Yeah, just look at his cultivation. He probably can’t withstand even one move from the Dragon Descendant. This is going to be entertaining.”

Many gazed at Qin Changsheng like a helpless lamb, ready to challenge and humiliate him mercilessly to curry favor with the Dragon Descendant.

Qin Changsheng naturally sensed the hostility but paid it no mind. After all, he had already gained a hundred thousand spirit stones, plus the more than twenty thousand from Nan Gong Ruoxi, totaling one hundred twenty thousand.

Once this was over today, he planned to find a chance to leave. If necessary, he could even burn his lifespan to use the Blood Escape technique. Since Nan Gong Ruoxi showed no regard for martial ethics, why should he bother with professional ethics?

Nan Gong Ruoxi had clearly thrown him into the fire; her promised reward was merely a price for selling his life. As a Qi Refining stage cultivator, he had offended the sect’s scion; survival looked slim.

“Feeling wronged?”

After Dragon Descendant left, Nan Gong Ruoxi smiled and looked at the frustrated Qin Changsheng beside her. Though that fellow had taken advantage of her earlier, his performance at the critical moment was decent. Since this guy wouldn’t last long having offended Dragon Descendant, she didn’t mind letting him have a little benefit.

Nan Gong Ruoxi knew well what fate awaited these shields; the spirit stones given were just enough to buy them some time.

Several shields before had already been sent away, making it difficult to find replacements. She hadn’t expected Qin Changsheng to cooperate so readily.

“Wronged? Not exactly. As a minor Qi Refining stage cultivator facing top-tier elites like you, I don’t have many choices. Neither side is pleased, and I’m caught in the middle. What can I do?” Qin Changsheng smiled helplessly.

“Don’t worry. I’ll do my best to protect you. Just follow my lead and help me push this marriage alliance aside. The benefits won’t be lacking,” Nan Gong Ruoxi reassured him.

“I guess the Holy Maiden’s family must have been in the pancake business before she started cultivating,” Qin Changsheng snorted.

Nan Gong Ruoxi sensed his resentment and chose not to press further. Indeed, this shield role was extremely dangerous, as it had offended nearly everyone in the sect.

The Elders’ Council wished for her to marry Dragon Descendant. The disappearance of the previous shields was largely handled by those in the sect, explaining why Nan Gong Ruoxi was so generous with the money.

Most of the time, she had resorted to bluffing when seeking shields. At first, she promised many opportunities, but the ultimate fate was death and destruction.

Qin Changsheng’s bitterness was not unwarranted.

Sure enough, not long after sitting down, someone came to challenge Qin Changsheng. The challenger was a decent-looking youth at the eighth level of Foundation Establishment, significantly more advanced than Qin Changsheng.

However, Qin Changsheng felt that compared to his own peculiar Qi Refining stage with a thousand layers, this Foundation Establishment stage was not overwhelmingly superior.

So he outright refused the challenge. “Sorry, we have a rule: the man stays at home, and the woman goes out. If you want to challenge me, you must first defeat my Tao companion. Only if you beat her will I accept your challenge.”

After saying this calmly, Qin Changsheng stepped behind Nan Gong Ruoxi. “Wife, it’s your turn.”

“You’re a grown man hiding behind a woman? What kind of skill is that?”

This cowardly posture infuriated the challenger. Even Nan Gong Ruoxi, prepared as she was, was somewhat stunned.

“What’s not skillful about it? If you had skill, why don’t you find someone to hide behind too?” Qin Changsheng placed his hands on his hips.

He didn’t care at all. He wasn’t truly Nan Gong Ruoxi’s Tao companion, so he had no foolish notion of standing up for a beauty.

Although his cultivation was only at the Qi Refining stage and he looked young, considering his long slumber, he was actually a generation elder to these people. There was no need to compete for glory with them.

Qin Changsheng’s words left everyone speechless.

“Get lost!” Nan Gong Ruoxi snorted just right.

The cultivator, caught off guard by her icy gaze, took two steps back and left immediately.

“That’s more like it. My wife is the Holy Maiden. With such a powerful backing here, you dare challenge me? Did you even ask her permission?”

Qin Changsheng, having just dealt with a nuisance, took out a reclining chair and lounged casually to the side, quietly eating fruit. This relaxed attitude of a weak cultivator was displayed to perfection.

He truly understood the meaning of having a powerful backing.

Nan Gong Ruoxi absurdly felt that, in front of Qin Changsheng, she looked like a clown.
