Volume One, Chapter 15: A Cure Found, Clues from the Little Rogue

Ye Lin was practically beside himself with irritation. What kind of habit was this? Why did she keep kneeling for no reason?
With no other choice, Ye Lin forcibly pulled her to her feet.
But this time, the delinquent girl seemed determined. No matter how hard he tried, she refused to get up. “If you don’t agree, I’m not getting up.”
“All right, all right. You win, little sister.” Ye Lin was utterly speechless.
“Then I’ll take you home to see my younger brother. It’s not far—he’s right here in Hengxi Village.” The moment the girl heard Ye Lin agree, she nearly jumped for joy.
She looked at him with eyes full of hope.
Having lived two lifetimes, Ye Lin was moved by the sincerity in her gaze.
“How about noon? Take me there during my lunch break.” Ye Lin glanced at the time. It was almost noon. He was going to treat an illness, not investigate a case, and felt awkward about taking time away from work.
“All right, then. Divine Doctor Policeman, I’ll wait for you at the village entrance at noon.” Having secured Ye Lin’s promise, the girl left in high spirits.
Divine Doctor Policeman?
It actually sounded pretty good.
...
At noon, the criminal police officers still had not returned. It seemed there was quite a lot going on over there.
Ye Lin hurriedly shoveled down a few mouthfuls of food before heading out. Although the police station officially had no lunch break, people generally had an hour or so to eat.
The delinquent girl was already waiting eagerly at the entrance to Hengxi Village, craning her neck in anticipation.
“Divine Doctor Policeman, over here!” The moment she spotted Ye Lin, she shouted excitedly.
Ye Lin shrank his neck. Damn, luckily he had come in plain clothes. If he had been wearing his uniform, he would have died of embarrassment.
He grabbed the girl by the arm.
“Keep your mouth shut and hurry up. I don’t have much time.”
“Oh, oh.” The girl obediently led the way.
They wound through the twists and turns of Hengxi Village before finally arriving outside a rented house belonging to a local resident.
“My brother and I rent a room here.”
Ye Lin took a look. It was the typical local housing arrangement: a three- or four-story building, with the landlord living on one floor and the rest divided into tiny rooms for rent.
The girl led Ye Lin to a cramped room on the second floor. It was only about seven or eight square meters, with two beds inside.
A pale young man lay on one of them. He looked about the age of a high school student.
“Divine Doctor Policeman, this is my younger brother. Could you take a look at him? I’ll earn the money and pay you back later.” Now that she had finally managed to bring Ye Lin here, the girl had grown nervous.

Ye Lin did not reply. He walked over to the bed.
The young man propped himself up with both hands and stared at Ye Lin in confusion.
He looked so young. Weren’t divine doctors supposed to be old men?
The boy glanced at the girl, worried that his sister had been deceived. Over the past two years, she had been cheated more than once, and the little money their family had left had all been spent on treating his legs.
“Little brother, he really is a divine doctor. He’s a police officer from the station, not a swindler.” The girl clearly understood what her brother was thinking.
The word “police” gave the boy a great deal of confidence. The police in Great Xia still enjoyed a good reputation; telling people to call the police in times of trouble was not merely an empty phrase.
He cooperatively lifted the blanket, revealing his bare legs.
Ye Lin paid no attention to the lack of clothing. Although he had ultimately never pursued medicine, he came from a family of physicians. His grandfather had forced him to memorize the principle that a doctor should regard every patient as family from a young age.
Ye Lin himself deeply agreed with it.
The young man’s lower legs were twisted at an abnormal angle, evidently the result of fractures to the shinbones.
The fracture sites were still swollen, while the lower portions of the legs had already begun to atrophy. The likely causes were insufficient blood flow and a lack of muscular movement.
“Divine Doctor Policeman, my brother broke both his legs when he fell while working at a construction site. The boss only paid us five thousand. The hospital doctor said he needs major surgery, and the operation on both legs would cost nearly a hundred thousand.”
“We don’t have that kind of money.” The girl’s voice dropped as soon as she mentioned the cost.
Ye Lin waved a hand, signaling her to be quiet.
He activated his Grandmaster-Level Bone-Setting Technique, and the young man’s condition became completely clear to him.
The fracture surfaces were in poor condition. There must have been continued pressure after the break, causing comminuted fractures at the sites of injury.
Moreover, too much time had passed. Some of the bones had already begun to heal. If treatment was delayed any longer, they would probably grow crooked, leaving him crippled for life.
The pressure on the blood vessels had also caused the muscles below the calves to contract and shrink, making the condition difficult to treat.
To be honest, with a fracture that had been neglected for so long, even a major hospital would probably struggle to cure it.
After all, the people treating illness there were human beings, not gods.
“Divine Doctor Policeman, can my brother’s legs be treated?” the girl asked nervously.
She had already had scans taken of her brother’s legs and understood the basic situation. To be honest, although she had begged Ye Lin to come, she had not held out much hope. She had simply wanted to do everything she could for her brother.
“Yes,” Ye Lin answered briefly.
“Oh, it’s all right. Divine Doctor Policeman, I know my brother’s legs are complicated. Don’t take it to heart.” The girl replied automatically.
Just as expected. There really was no hope.
Thud!

Ye Lin rapped her on the head with his knuckles. “What are you thinking? I said they can be treated. I can cure them.”
“Ow!” The girl cried out in pain, then stared at Ye Lin in disbelief. “Did you just say they can be treated?”
A spark of hope appeared in her brother’s eyes as well. “They really can be cured?”
“I said I can cure them, so I can. It’ll just be a little troublesome. I need to make some preparations.”
“Really?”
“If not, then no.”
“Oh, come on! Can you or can’t you?”
“Yes.”
The tedious back-and-forth was utterly childish, yet it perfectly revealed the girl’s disbelief.
“There’s hope. There’s hope.” Her eyes suddenly reddened, and tears began streaming down her face.
She dropped onto the bed, embraced her brother, and sobbed. “There’s hope, little brother. You can be saved.”
“Sis...”
Watching the siblings weep in each other’s arms, Ye Lin was suddenly struck by a powerful realization.
Damn system!
That wretched system!
If it weren’t for the system, he could have become a doctor and saved people instead of becoming a police officer.
But then again, if the system had not granted him the Grandmaster-Level Bone-Setting Technique, he probably would not have been able to treat the boy either.
The siblings cried for a while. Eventually, their emotions finally settled somewhat.
The girl rose and once again tried to kneel before Ye Lin, but he caught her and pulled her back up.
“All right, stop doing that. I’ll prepare some medicine and come back over the next couple of days to treat your brother.”
“Thank you, thank you, Divine Doctor Policeman.” Other than repeating her thanks, the girl did not know what else to say.
However, just as she was walking Ye Lin out, she suddenly grabbed him, looking as though she wanted to speak but could not bring herself to do so.
“Little sister, whatever you have to say, say it quickly. I have to get back to work, and it’s already getting late.”
“Divine Doctor Policeman, I have a lead. There’s a drug den in the village. I can tell you where it is,” the girl whispered.
