Lu Xiuyi remained silent.

“Hmph,” Jiang Yuan glared at him, thinking she shouldn’t have expected anything from him.

“Then tell me, why exactly are you angry?” Jiang Yuan didn’t want to be warned inexplicably again next time.

Lu Xiuyi’s dark eyes fixed on Jiang Yuan, lingering in silence for a long while. Just when Jiang Yuan thought he wouldn’t speak, she slowly heard him say, “My grandparents were reported and couldn’t bear the gossip and judgment from everyone, so they left.”

Jiang Yuan knew the Lu family had been landlords before, and after being classified among the “black five categories,” they didn’t just suffer materially but endured the painful discrimination and exclusion from those around them.

In that instant, Jiang Yuan suddenly understood why Lu Xiuyi was angry, and the frustration she had been holding inside dissipated like smoke.

At the same time... she felt a twinge of guilt.

Seeing that she was no longer angry, Lu Xiuyi’s tension eased, and he let go.

“Can I get into bed tonight?” Lu Xiuyi hugged the quilt, standing by the bed, his cold eyes shadowed with a hint of gloom.

Jiang Yuan saw a trace of pity in his gaze, pursed her lips, and murmured, “I never said you couldn’t get into bed.”

Lu Xiuyi was speechless.

He clearly remembered that last night when he came back, not only was the light off, but she had also taken up most of the bed, forcing him to curl up with the quilt on the floor.

Only at dawn did he climb onto the bed, but he had to sleep on his side.

“What’s with that look?” Jiang Yuan’s eyes widened, as if she truly had forbidden him from getting in bed.

“Nothing,” Lu Xiuyi shook his head, spread the quilt on his side, and got in.

With a night of sweet dreams and revenge avenged, Lu Xiuyi also apologized to her, and Jiang Yuan slept especially soundly.

When she woke up the next morning, she felt her cheek was wet and slippery to the touch.

Opening her eyes, she realized she had drooled.

Before Lu Xiuyi woke up, Jiang Yuan quickly wiped it off, not wanting him to find out.

Knock, knock, knock...

Before Jiang Yuan could head out for her run, someone knocked at the door.

“Who is it?” Jiang Yuan called out, going to open the door. Who would come knocking this early?

“Jiang Yuan, great, I was looking for you, you wretched woman.” Outside stood Liu Fendou, his face turning green with anger upon seeing Jiang Yuan.

Jiang Yuan shot him a disdainful look and said, “Went to eat crap this early? Your mouth’s filthy.”

Liu Fendou’s face immediately darkened, and he pointed at Jiang Yuan, cursing, “A wretch is a wretch. Good thing I didn’t want you; otherwise...”

With a sharp slap, Liu Fendou’s words were cut off as a red handprint appeared on his face.

“How dare you hit me?” Liu Fendou clutched his burning cheek, eyes blazing as he glared fiercely at Jiang Yuan.

“The village chief didn’t teach you well, so I’ll teach you how to behave.”

Jiang Yuan’s palm was strong enough that even after hitting him, a tingling sensation lingered in her hand.

The commotion had already alerted others in the courtyard.

Lu Xiuyi was the first to come out, and upon seeing Liu Fendou, his expression darkened.

Li Lianhua and Lu Fengnan followed closely behind, their faces also grim.

Liu Fendou scanned the courtyard with a sneer.

“Good, everyone’s here. Let’s talk about who poisoned my dog, Da Hei.”

Da Hei was the name of the village chief’s Tibetan mastiff.

Li Lianhua stepped forward, frowning. “Liu Fendou, who poisoned your dog? Don’t slander others.”

“It’s her.” Liu Fendou pointed at Jiang Yuan, convinced it was her. A few days ago, Da Hei nearly bit her, so she held a grudge and poisoned the dog.

With a slap, Jiang Yuan immediately struck Liu Fendou’s face again, unevenly.

“Liu Fendou, stop pinning false accusations on me. Whoever did it, find them yourself.”

Though she regretted that someone else had acted before she could, the dog nearly bit her; she wouldn’t have kept it around.

But it wasn’t her doing, and she refused to take the blame.

“Did you hear that? It wasn’t our little Yuan. Leave now.” Li Lianhua said and started to shoo Liu Fendou away.

“Jiang Yuan, stop denying it. It was you.” Liu Fendou was already convinced Jiang Yuan did it.

“Not leaving, huh?” Jiang Yuan, tired of arguing with Liu Fendou, began walking toward the gate.

“Closing the door and beating the dog? I’ll personally teach you a lesson.”

Seeing Jiang Yuan was serious, Liu Fendou panicked. The four people in this courtyard were family; if they really beat him, he’d be done for.

“Don’t get cocky. You owe me for Da Hei, and I’ll be back.” Cowardly and defiant, Liu Fendou fled just before Jiang Yuan shut the door.

He even looked back and glared viciously at Jiang Yuan.

Jiang Yuan rolled her eyes internally. What a nerve, daring to glare at her?

“Little Yuan, don’t be afraid. We’ll all stand by you.” Li Lianhua came over and patted Jiang Yuan’s back.

“It’s not me,” Jiang Yuan turned and said, “Mom, it really wasn’t me. I was with him all day yesterday.” She glanced toward Lu Xiuyi.

“?” Li Lianhua looked puzzled. Had she been mistaken?

Nearby, Lu Fengnan glanced meaningfully at Lu Xiuyi. Well, there’s still one more person.

Lu Xiuyi raised an eyebrow at his father but ignored him.

Jiang Yuan found it strange too. Who else besides her would want to kill that Tibetan mastiff? Perhaps someone who had been bitten by the dog before?

But that also didn’t seem right.

If she found out who the well-meaning person was, she would definitely thank them.

“Well, whoever it is, it has nothing to do with us. Let’s go back to sleep.” Li Lianhua yawned and headed inside.

Lu Fengnan followed closely.

Suddenly, only two were left in the courtyard. Jiang Yuan looked up, blinking her big bright eyes. “Husband, are you coming running with me?”

Since he was no longer angry, Jiang Yuan’s plan had to continue — to nurture their relationship.

“No need.” Lu Xiuyi pursed his lips and shook his head lightly, decliningI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
