Chapter 7: Granny Fang

Di Qiu responded humbly, “Grandma, you flatter me.”
The printer in the office whirred, spitting out a sheet of paper. Deng Jingxiang, responsible for registering the names, stood up to retrieve it, then turned to address the dozen or so psychics gathered there. “Let me first explain the assessment rules.”
“There’s only one requirement: locate the sealed anomalies, resolve them, and eliminate them. The exam lasts eight hours. Eliminating one hundred anomalies qualifies you as Grade D; three hundred, Grade C; five hundred, Grade B; and above five hundred, Grade A.”
“Any questions?”
“No,” came the unanimous reply from the seasoned veterans in school uniforms. Only Di Qiu and Zhu Yufang remained silent.
Zhu Yufang raised her hand, “Can the seals on anomalies really be removed at will? This old lady has never heard of such a thing.”
Deng Jingxiang smiled faintly, “That question falls within the exam content, so no further explanation will be given.”
Di Qiu had already suspected this. Since this special department was dedicated to resolving anomalies, there must be a universal method to break their seals.
The books didn’t mention it explicitly, only offering some examples.
Probably to prevent curious or malicious people from experimenting. If such knowledge were openly shared, the consequences could overwhelm any country.
If someone accidentally unsealed an S3-level anomaly, many could be unleashed again.
It was unclear whether this universal method would be taught upon entering the Academy of Psychics or only revealed in the Central Micro Bureau.
“Ah, that complicates things,” Zhu Yufang said with some worry.
Deng Jingxiang looked at Di Qiu and Zhu Yufang, the only two who hadn’t responded earlier, and officially asked again, “Do either of you have any questions?”
Di Qiu thought for a moment and asked, “Does the rank of the anomalies we eliminate matter? If I successfully kill one hundred F-level anomalies, does that count as passing?”
“There are anomalies ranging from F to S3 levels in the testing field, in varying numbers. If a candidate triggers a hidden S3-level anomaly and kills it, they will be granted exceptional passing status with an A-grade rating,” Deng Jingxiang patiently explained.
“How many S3 anomalies are in the testing field?” Zhu Yufang inquired.
Judging by the question, she still didn’t grasp the terror of S3-level anomalies.
Standing beside Di Qiu, the enthusiastic little chubby couldn’t help but explain, “Even just one wiped us all out. You think there are a hundred in there?”
“There is only one S3 anomaly,” Deng Jingxiang replied expressionlessly.

“Are the anomalies in the assessment real or simulated?” Di Qiu asked again, a question of great importance for her approach to the exam.
“If only they were simulated,” one student sighed.
So, it was real combat.
Zhu Yufang wore a worried expression. “If this old bone breaks in there, what will I do?”
Deng Jingxiang smiled faintly. “If you feel uneasy, you may withdraw from the assessment before entering the testing area. However, if you forfeit this exam, you must wait another six months before applying again.”
From this exchange, Di Qiu realized that this Central Micro Bureau was likely the ultimate boss-level authority.
“Any other questions? Have you all decided whether to participate?” Deng Jingxiang asked the seated candidates.
Everyone shook their heads. “No questions.”
Zhu Yufang shifted her cane, speaking slowly, “I have no questions either. When do we start?”
“Now.”
With a snap of her fingers, darkness enveloped them. Moments later, the darkness dissipated, and they found themselves not in the high-rise office but in a city.
A prosperous city, yet deserted.
“This is the anomaly testing site created by the Central Micro Bureau. The sealed anomalies are hidden somewhere in this city. Use your unique awakened abilities!”
After speaking, Deng Jingxiang snapped her fingers again. A black teleportation gate appeared behind her. As she turned and stepped through, the gate vanished into thin air.
Experiencing the marvels of psychics firsthand, Di Qiu’s jaw dropped. “Could this be the legendary teleportation gate?”
“Wow, this is even cooler than genuine cultivation,” one student muttered.
Once the proctor left, the dozen or so previously silent students suddenly came alive.
“Cultivation? What’s that compared to us psychics? Some of us can traverse the heavens and the earth. Cultivators need spiritual energy to cultivate, but we don’t rely on that.”
“Traversing heaven and earth is nothing. Wait until you pass the entrance exam and get assigned in the Academy. When you’re familiar, you’ll see.”
“By the way, what levels are your psychic abilities?”
Many eyes turned to Zhu Yufang.

Compared to Di Qiu’s abilities, they were more curious about Zhu Yufang’s. Awakening psychic powers at her age was rare; a few in the Academy fit that profile, usually brought by their children or grandchildren to spend their twilight years. But passing the Central Micro Bureau’s exam at such an age was nearly unheard of.
The elderly woman stood among the vibrant youth. Though she seemed out of touch with the times, she smiled gently and said, “You’ll see once you get familiar.”
Di Qiu naturally took this as a chance to skip the topic.
The group laughed at this. “True, time waits for no one. Finding a hundred sealed anomalies won’t be easy.”
With that, everyone fell silent about how to find anomalies and dispersed, leaving only Di Qiu and Zhu Yufang—one young, one old—watching the lively departing figures, once again amazed.
“Hey, they left so quickly. I wanted to see how they find and unseal the anomalies,” Zhu Yufang said regretfully.
Honestly, Di Qiu felt the same. She hadn’t intended to take the Central Micro Bureau’s exam seriously; she just wanted to observe and learn from others.
“Little one, want to team up with this old lady to find anomalies?” Zhu Yufang glanced at the sky. “I don’t recall the rules forbidding teams.”
“Sure. I was just wondering where to start,” Di Qiu replied.
She had planned to politely decline but reconsidered, given Zhu Yufang’s earlier actions. Perhaps she wasn’t as inexperienced as she seemed, so Di Qiu agreed.
“Hehe, you just joined this school too? It’s my first time dealing with this stuff. All these psychics and anomalies I only heard about from others. I’ve lived so long without ever seeing an anomaly. Didn’t expect that at my age, I’d awaken psychic powers. My grandchildren envy me to no end.”
“How old are you, Grandma?”
“Ninety-eight. Can’t tell, huh? Just call me Granny Fang. Even the neighborhood kids do.”
“Sigh, it’s my first time walking among these skyscrapers. I used to live in the busy city center among low-rise houses. Walking these quiet streets feels strange.”
Di Qiu hadn’t expected Zhu Yufang to be so talkative. The two walked down the street—only Zhu Yufang spoke, while the only other sound was her cane tapping “clack, clack.”
Suddenly, an explosion sounded ahead, and a building began to collapse.
