Chapter 20: "Tonight Will Be Their Death Sentence!"

The dormitory door had been smashed open. At this moment, the pounding sounds echoed clearly down the corridor, ringing sharply in Chen Kun’s ears. In the pitch-black darkness, he could even distinctly hear the beating of his own heart.
The screen on his watch had gone dark.
There was no light to reveal his position. He could feel the tension in Hei Hao’s body beside him, but still, he glanced at his own fear level.
Ninety-four percent.
Suddenly, he realized that he seemed to have grown a lot. In such an environment, his fear level was only at 94 percent. In the past, it would have already maxed out at 100 percent. His adaptability was evidently better than he had imagined.
And then—
Wait!
Chen Kun’s heart skipped a beat. He suddenly noticed faint lines of writing carved under the bed slats. The letters were a deep crimson, like dried blood, scrawled crookedly as if scratched out with fingernails.
“Bullied me… always bullied me…”
“All seven of them deserve to die! All of them!!!”
“Tonight will be their death day!”
The writing was blurred and hard to make out clearly.
But it matched his inner suspicion.
Sure enough, it was about bullying or exclusion. However… he suddenly recalled the long-haired female ghost he had met on the rooftop who said, “All seven of you deserve to die,” but there were only six of them…
He had originally thought the seven female ghosts in this scenario were victims.
But now it seemed otherwise.
The seven female ghosts in this scenario were actually the perpetrators, and the victim was the one seeking revenge. The victim had killed these seven girls, turning them into vengeful spirits. In other words… the scenario had changed. The female ghost they met on the rooftop was the eighth ghost.
Damn it!
Chen Kun cursed inwardly. Before coming here, the middle-aged police officer had told him this scenario was almost risk-free. Although recent scans indicated high danger levels, normally the scenario’s content wouldn’t suddenly change or pose a problem.
But now, clearly, he had encountered this rare event.
This eighth ghost had appeared. This long-haired ghost was the only one in the scenario with offensive capabilities, while the other seven ghosts were harmless. This meant he only had to avoid the long-haired ghost and find the seven female ghosts’ corpses to complete the mission and exit.
The difficulty of the task had increased.
At that moment—
“Bang, bang, bang!”
The muffled pounding echoed continuously down the corridor, growing closer and closer, and the most despairing thing happened: from where he was, Chen Kun could clearly see the ghost entering his dormitory.

A female ghost standing on her head.
She wore pajamas, but her body was mangled and bloody, her hair spread out on the floor.
Because she was upside down, the pajama top covered her entire head, exposing much more than it concealed.
But Chen Kun had no mind to worry about such things. He tightly covered his mouth, his eyes filled with terror as he stared fixedly at the ghost, ready to spring into action. The ghost’s head, obscured by pajamas and hair, seemed oblivious to their presence.
After lingering at the dormitory door for a few seconds, she resumed her pounding, methodically checking each dorm room in the corridor, as if searching for something.
...
Safe for the moment.
Hei Hao glanced at Chen Kun’s watch showing a 98% fear level and whispered in admiration, “Brother Kun, impressive.”
Indeed, impressive. It was clear that this world had tempered Kun. In the past, he would already be on the verge of madness at this point.
“...”
Chen Kun sighed softly. “There has been progress.”
Although he had just kicked Hei Hao out from under the bed with one foot and struggled to climb out himself, he lowered his voice and spoke urgently.
“This place isn’t safe.”
“So far, one thing is certain: this scenario has eight female ghosts. The one we met on the rooftop is aggressive and opposed to the other seven.”
“We need to find the corpses of those seven while avoiding the long-haired ghost.”
It was clear.
The rules in this scenario differed somewhat from those in the outside world. Here, ghosts seemed to rely on sight for hunting humans. According to outside rules, his 98% fear level would shine like a beacon to ghosts.
“Let’s go!”
The middle-aged man hiding under another bed quickly rolled over and got up. In the previous moment, if any of the three of them had screamed, they would have been instantly discovered. Fortunately, their silence held.
...
Carefully, Chen Kun emerged from the dormitory, cautiously peering down the corridor at the ghost walking on her head before striding off in the opposite direction.
This ghost had died from jumping off a building; her body was surely outside the dormitory.
As for one of the remaining six corpses, he had already suspected its location before the scenario started. There was a huge water tank on the rooftop, a perfect place to kill and hide a body.
They were trapped temporarily on the seventh floor.
No matter how far they went down, they remained on the seventh floor. Maybe trying to go up would help.

Chen Kun led the way, his back to Hei Hao, with the middle-aged man bringing up the rear. The three tiptoed cautiously back up to the rooftop.
...
On the rooftop.
Beneath the moonlight.
A woman dressed in a clean, neat windbreaker lay alone in a pool of blood.
“Poor kid,” Hei Hao said regretfully. For some reason, looking at this woman made him feel a sorrow akin to the demise of a kindred spirit. The long-haired ghost’s attack was far beyond their capabilities—none of them could withstand that blow.
“By the way, why are you following us so closely?” Hei Hao glanced sideways at the middle-aged man.
“Of course,” the middle-aged man replied uneasily, quickly scanning their surroundings and lowering his voice to a hoarse whisper. “We all come from the same world, so we’re kind of compatriots. Naturally, there’s more trust. Besides, you’re so capable in a fight.”
“However…”
“Since we can’t leave the seventh floor, how did the others get out?”
“And why are we trapped here?”
“I think someone died in the stairwell. Or maybe there’s a ghost there interfering with me.”
“That makes sense.”
Chen Kun narrowed his eyes and spoke softly, “You might be right. There’s a garbage chute entrance on the seventh floor. There should be a corpse hidden there.”
Old mid-rise buildings often have a vertical garbage chute built inside the stairwell.
Each floor has an entrance.
The entrance is covered with a steel lid, usually sealed. When there is garbage, the lid is opened to throw it inside. It’s a design typical of older buildings—young people today have never even seen, let alone heard of, such a thing.
But generally speaking,
One person can easily go down that chute. If it’s a girl, she wouldn’t get stuck and would slide straight down to the first floor.
