Chapter Nineteen: The Expert
That day, Wu Jiao brought an outer disciple of the Heavenly Star Wolf Sect, Guo Yi, to meet with Cao Yun.
Guo Yi was about the same age as Cao Yun but appeared quite youthful. He wore the distinctive outer sect attire of the Heavenly Star Wolf Sect, and a trace of unease flickered across his expression.
“Brother Cao, that Four-Eyed Spirit Fox is truly troublesome,” Guo Yi began, his voice tinged with helplessness. “I went to great lengths to borrow this advanced junior Purple Yang Sword from Senior Brother Zuo within the sect, and it cost me a full twenty-five spirit stones. I hope you can unleash your extraordinary skills and slay that beast in one fell swoop. Once the task is complete, I will reward you with two additional Spirit Core Pills on top of our original agreement to show my gratitude.”
Though Guo Yi had already reached the fifth layer of Qi Refinement, surpassing Cao Yun in cultivation, his practical combat experience was rather lacking. Sending him alone to hunt a beast with power equivalent to the sixth layer of Qi Refinement—the Four-Eyed Spirit Fox—would undoubtedly place him in grave danger.
However, he needed the fox’s eyes to advance to the third stage of his Demonic Eye Heavenly Art. The sect’s task reward was steep, and he couldn’t afford it. So, through Wu Jiao’s recommendation, he sought out Cao Yun’s assistance.
Though he had heard of Cao Yun’s name before, he hadn’t paid much attention. After all, what great skill could a mere blood slave with only the second layer of Qi Refinement possibly possess?
But when he learned that a junior disciple, wielding only a mid-level primary magical weapon, had helped Cao Yun slay the Azure-Eyed Mad Lion, he realized Cao Yun was no ordinary blood slave.
Thus, he decided to take a chance and ask Cao Yun to help him obtain the Four-Eyed Spirit Fox’s eyes.
“Brother Guo, rest assured, I will not gamble with my life,” Cao Yun replied calmly. “Within two days, I will personally deliver those eyes to you.”
At these words, Guo Yi’s face lit up with joy. If he could obtain the fox’s eyes at such a minimal cost, it would be a tremendous boon.
Two days earlier, Wu Jiao had already passed on the information about the Four-Eyed Spirit Fox to Cao Yun. Cao Yun spent two full days observing the creature carefully before determining he was capable of handling it. The original bounty was ten Spirit Core Pills, and now two more had been added—an unexpected bonus.
Late at night, Cao Yun concealed himself behind a massive rock near the cave entrance and cautiously peeked out. The entrance was small, barely wide enough for three or four people abreast. Inside, darkness prevailed, obscuring the cave’s interior.
With a gentle raise of his hand, three red orbs shot forth from his palm, hurtling into the black cave. Moments later, three fireballs exploded inside, followed by a sharp, piercing howl that tore through the night.
A snow-white demon fox, half a zhang in length, with four eyes atop its head, burst from the cave and lunged toward Cao Yun.
The speed of the Four-Eyed Spirit Fox startled Cao Yun, but he was prepared. Using mundane martial agility combined with his Wind Control Technique, he effortlessly dodged the fox’s attack.
Yet the beast was undeterred. Four golden beams shot from its eyes like lightning bolts. Cao Yun vanished in a flash, as if teleporting, evading the beams while simultaneously launching four bone needles—each roughly thumb-thick and polished from bone—at the fox.
The fox swiped its claws, transforming them into silver blades that clashed against the needles with a resounding bang, shattering them into dust. The hidden venom within the needles dispersed into a mist.
Cao Yun pointed his sword at the fox and softly commanded, “Gale Technique!”
A fierce wind rose instantly, blowing the mist toward the fox’s entire body. It let out a sharp roar, seemingly undeterred, and charged again. But as it reached Cao Yun, it suddenly collapsed, panting heavily, black blood pouring from its eyes, ears, mouth, and nose.
Cao Yun leapt backward to create distance, and at that moment, a faint emerald glow emanated from his hand. Like a rainbow piercing the sun, the glow instantly severed the fox’s neck. As its head rolled away, the true form of the green light revealed itself—a primary advanced Purple Yang Sword deeply embedded in the ground, its blade shimmering coldly.
“Unfortunately, I have yet to reach the third layer of Qi Refinement, so my spiritual consciousness cannot leave my body to remotely wield the Wind Control Technique on this sword. Otherwise, killing this beast wouldn’t have been so difficult,” Cao Yun said regretfully as he approached and gently drew the sword from the earth.
The entire process of slaying the Four-Eyed Spirit Fox had flowed smoothly and effortlessly, as natural as drifting clouds and flowing water.
Yet if anyone knew that Cao Yun, at only the second layer of Qi Refinement, had slain a beast on par with the sixth layer—one that even human cultivators struggled to defeat—they would surely marvel at the tale.
From this day forth, Cao Yun’s name would only grow more resounding within the Heavenly Star Wolf Sect.
At noon two days later, in Sunset Valley, Cao Yun handed the fox’s eyes to Guo Yi, who stared in stunned disbelief. He had only hoped to try his luck, never imagining his wish would be fulfilled so easily.
He gazed at Cao Yun as if beholding a deity, filled with reverence.
“Junior Brother Guo, Brother Cao had already slain the Four-Eyed Spirit Fox with ease last night. If I hadn’t insisted on informing you, you could have seen these precious eyes yourself then,” Wu Jiao teased, watching Guo Yi’s exaggerated expression.
“What? Did I hear that right?” Guo Yi exclaimed in disbelief. “Brother Cao killed the fox last night? I thought he’d need to prepare for a fierce battle. I never imagined it would be so effortless. Could the fox be all bark and no bite?”
“Junior Brother Guo, you know betterI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
