Lu Wentan’s expression was like that. “I only said that a nurse had treated it before going to the hospital.”

Gu Yan frowned deeply. So, the hospital probably just treated it as an ordinary external injury and didn’t carefully check for glass fragments.

“How could you say that to the doctor?”

“How could you lie?”

“If foreign objects in the flesh aren’t dealt with, infection can be fatal! Do you know that?”

She spoke anxiously, fast and clearly, with a rigor and seriousness befitting a medical professional treating a patient.

Lu Wentan’s thin lips moved slightly, as if wanting to say something, but he hesitated.

He hadn’t expected her to get so worked up.

How could Gu Yan not be upset?

She had once made such a basic mistake—trusting the patient’s statement blindly—which had led to a medical accident that took a life!

And that was while she was still an intern. She had been burdened with that medical incident, and the patient’s family had caused trouble for nearly a year.

From her hospital department to the school, to blocking the dormitory building, enduring long-lasting insults and constant exposure.

In the end, she dropped out, and which hospital would dare to hire her afterward?

Gu Yan turned to the medical cabinet to find something useful, wanting to help him re-examine the injury.

In fact, here there were plenty of drugs and basic medical instruments; she had the professional ability to help him check.

Maybe recalling those past events, her hands trembled slightly, her vision seemed unclear, and as she took out cotton and iodine, they scattered and fell to the floor.

Lu Wentan watched the commotion and looked up at her.

She looked anxious.

Anxiety to an abnormal degree.

“Gu Yan,” Lu Wentan’s voice was calm and gentle, his brow furrowing slightly.

Gu Yan ignored him and kept busy, but the more she tried, the more flustered she became.

Lu Wentan then rose and walked over. After only two steps, Gu Yan suddenly turned around, face fierce: “Sit there and don’t move! Do you want to die?”

Her voice was loud enough.

Lu Wentan felt no warmth in his heart; instead, a pang of pain.

“You won’t die.” He tried to hold her hand down. “Let’s stop for now.”

He hadn’t expected her to be so timid—was she afraid he might die?

Such a minor injury.

“Are you really worried about me?” The man’s low voice was a stark contrast to Gu Yan’s frantic state.

Hearing this, Gu Yan’s hands froze for a moment.

Was she worried about him?

Definitely.

Even if not from a medical professional’s mindset, he was someone she had admired secretly for a long time, someone she had always liked.

But his words made Gu Yan instantly alert.

She looked at him slowly, suddenly recalling that Cong Wen had told her on the phone that the artery was injured.

If the doctors had found artery damage, how could it have been a careless examination?

How could they have missed glass shards?

“You lied to me?” Gu Yan finally realized.

Her face instantly turned cold.

“Is lying fun?”

Gu Yan’s features were beautiful—clear, delicate bone structure, with large, moist eyes. Her smile was pure, but when cold, she was deadly.

It was the first time Lu Wentan had seen her like this.

He hadn’t expected such a reaction from a casual remark.

Gu Yan threw the cotton and iodine aside, too angry to contain herself: “Just because you knew I used to study medicine, you took advantage of my feelings! Do you know how cruel that is?”

Just when Gu Yan wanted to leave immediately, Lu Wentan blocked her path.

“You’re exaggerating, but the wound does hurt.”

Gu Yan’s expression remained cold. “If I can’t serve President Lu, find someone who can.”

“You mean Qu Yanqing?” he was straightforward.

Gu Yan paused.

She didn’t know the name but recalled he had called someone “Yanyan” on the phone, and this woman’s name contained that same pinyin.

“Your big reaction is because of those nonsense from He Baizhuo?”

Lu Wentan always spoke softly and slowly, as if it wasn’t a big deal.

But in his eyes, there was a faint but undeniable hope, wanting her to answer.

“What does that have to do with me?” Gu Yan found it absurd.

She stepped past him and left the medical room.

After walking a few steps, she realized they had been arguing so fiercely inside—where was Lu Ye?

When she entered the living room, no one was there.

“Where’s Young Master Lu?” she asked Xiaoxi.

“He said, ‘Little demon, are you mutating? Yesterday you were human, today a fox spirit? Wait till I get there, I’ll make you beg!’ and then he left,” Xiaoxi mimicked Lu Ye’s tone and looked at her.

Gu Yan wanted to curse.

That dog Lu Ye brought her here and then ran off! She hadn’t driven; how was she supposed to get back?

She turned to Lu Wentan who had followed her out. “Can the driver give me a ride?”

“You should have met Cong Wen when he left.”

Meaning, Taihe Hongyu had no driver today.

Just then, Lu Ye called her.

He said only one thing: “Stay at my uncle’s place tonight. Take good care of him for me and Grandpa. Behave well, and when I get the benefits, you get half!” Then he hung up.

Gu Yan gripped the phone without hesitation. “I won’t stay. I’ll take a taxi later.”

She said this to Lu Wentan.

But Lu Wentan didn’t respond.

It was quite hot outside, but she felt confident she could get a taxi walking out.

Then even Old Lu called her, saying she had cared for Lu Ye for two years and was the most experienced caretaker, so she should look after Lu Wentan, who couldn’t skip work tomorrow.

The way he said it made it feel as if the company’s billions in losses over the past two days were her fault if she didn’t care for him.

In the end, Gu Yan stayed, but she hardly did anything except change Lu Wentan’s bandages.

Strangely, though she was trapped alone at Taihe Hongyu, Lu Wentan didn’t do anything to her.

Still, Gu Yan couldn’t sleep, afraid the door lock was useless on him.

She stayed awake until one or two in the morning before slowly falling asleep.

The next day, she got up early as usual, skipped breakfast, and left straight away.

After wandering around the villa area and walking some distance, she finally hailed a taxi and went straight to the company.

She had been at work for nearly two weeks now. Her actual tasks were minimal—mostly handling documents—quite idle.

When Lu Ye showed up again with a thermal food container, she was yawning in the tea room.

“Went stealing vegetables last night?” Lu Ye casually ignored abandoning her yesterday.

Gu Yan glanced at the container.

She knew it was for Lu Wentan. Since she wouldn’t deliver it, she picked up her coffee and headed back to her desk.

Lu Ye saw she was angry, smiled slyly, and grabbed her arm. “Good brother.”

“Ugh!” Gu Yan gagged.

At first, Lu Ye thought she was just sulking, mad at him.

But Gu Yan’s nausea persisted. After gagging several times, she put down her coffee and hurried to the restroom.

Lu Ye muttered without thinking, “Is she pregnant?”
