Volume One, Chapter Four: The Young Uncle

Lu Wentian’s gaze swept across the suit sleeve she was clutching.
“Strong bite, I could swallow Huatai whole,” he responded.
Lu Zhaohui was slightly surprised. “You settled it last night?”
Gu Yan exhaled, realizing they were talking about business.
Lu Zhaohui couldn’t respond to Lu Wentian immediately, so he turned his attention to Gu Yan. “Why are you still sitting there?”
Gu Yan snapped back to reality, preparing to leave.
But she was stopped again. “No greeting?”
Her eyes drifted past Lu Wentian’s lips, avoiding his gaze.
She opened her mouth, but the word “uncle” in her throat suddenly lost its voice.
Last night, in a haze of passion, Lu Wentian had bitten her ear and asked, “Who am I?”
At first, she answered, “Lu Wentian.”
“Answer again.” The man was clearly dissatisfied.
Until she finally said, “Little Uncle!”
He seemed fond of this term, making her repeat it while he responded in kind.
Now Gu Yan thought, he must have mistaken her for someone else.
“Fourth uncle.” Gu Yan’s voice was dull as she stood up. “You two talk.”
Her attitude was not confrontational, but compared to her usual self, it was distinctly different.
Lu Ye leaned against the sofa, looking at his little uncle.
The man’s face was calm but cold, with a hint of displeasure.
Lu Ye glanced at Gu Yan again. “Yan Yan, can you get me an ice pack? It’s burning badly.”
Hearing this familiar nickname made Gu Yan feel disgusted.
She turned toward the backyard, the burning sensation was probably something else.
“Yan Yan?” Lu Ye’s voice was teasing as he got up and followed Gu Yan, slipping an arm around her waist.
“Why so mad? Confused? The ice pack is in the kitchen.”
Gu Yan was pulled toward the kitchen without a word, unable to break free, and her elbow bumped into him. “Let go!”
Lu Ye lowered his voice. “Cooperate with me. Play the role of a good wife and mother today. Tomorrow I’ll admit my fault and have grandpa cancel the engagement.”
Little Uncle had just secured Huatai; if his lucky charm caused any trouble now, he’d be the one to take the blame.
Gu Yan could tell the old man wouldn’t easily agree unless Lu Ye also consented to call off the engagement.
She looked up at him. “If you dare to trick me, you’ll be impotent for life!”
Lu Ye was momentarily stunned.
Yesterday in the office, he hadn’t noticed the change in her—as if she had swapped souls with a different person.
Today she resembled a wild kitten.
Interesting.
He curled his lips and leaned down. “When have I ever gone back on my word?”

To those entering the living room, the scene looked like a quarrelsome young couple.
Lu Zhaohui’s expression improved considerably.
Uncle He laughed by the side. “The young master and young mistress really suit each other!”
Lu Wentian was deeply withdrawn, not exactly gloomy but exuding a cool, distant aura.
“Uncle He, glasses aren’t expensive. If they don’t work out, just ask the chairman for reimbursement.”
Uncle He was caught off guard by the remark, clearly being teased for his poor eyesight.
Then he noticed the fourth brother’s coat left on the sofa by Gu Yan.
So that was the matter.
He hurried over to grab the coat. “Look at my eyes, here you go!”
Soon after, Lu Ye and Gu Yan returned together.
Gu Yan was nestled against Lu Ye’s side, his arm around her waist.
Lu Zhaohui spoke at the right moment. “Lu Ye’s wedding should be held soon too—they’re both twenty-five now, not young anymore. Register now, have three kids in five years, or after thirty it will be harder to conceive.”
Three kids in five years?
Other families, it’s the mother-in-law who nags, but in the Lu family, the old man was even more demanding than the women.
Gu Yan didn’t know what expression to wear—did they see her as a baby-making machine?
Lu Wentian glanced over at Gu Yan’s plainly dressed face.
Feeling targeted, she said, “You’re mocking me.”
Lu Wentian was already thirty-two.
“What’s that got to do with you!” Lu Zhaohui shot him a glance. “Why would I care about you?”
“If I’d made you marry earlier, you would’ve known better.”
“If I let you date someone these years, you’d say you have someone special.”
He had no one at all! He was practically a saint by now.
“Just don’t bring a man home, and I can rest easy. Who dares to rush you?”
Lu Zhaohui had to drink water to ease his frustration.
Uncle He came back into the living room, smiling. “Old master, fourth brother might really have someone. He said I have bad eyesight, but there’s lipstick on this coat.”
He then asked Lu Wentian, “You didn’t notice?”
Gu Yan’s heart tightened sharply.
She instinctively pressed her lips together—she’d been using the same lipstick these past two days.
Lu Wentian glanced coldly at the coat. “The lipstick quality isn’t great. Buy a better one next time.”
Gu Yan’s heart suddenly pounded.
Next time?
What did he mean? He wouldn’t let her off?
Gu Yan could hardly imagine how she’d die if Lu Wentian pinned this on her.
“I’ll help in the kitchen!” she stood abruptly.

She could faintly hear the men gossiping in the living room, eager to discover who Lu Wentian was hiding, but he didn’t respond at all.
Gu Yan walked quickly, not daring to listen.
In the kitchen, after nearly knocking over two bowls and almost dropping a knife on a servant’s foot, she was sent away.
To fetch wine from the cellar.
A while later, a servant brought out fruit. “Young master, maybe you should soothe the young mistress. Maybe you were too harsh with her; she’s been distracted, careless, almost cut her foot. I sent her to the cellar to get some wine.”
Lu Ye, nonchalant and half-smiling, said, “Sensitive. We’ll calm her down when we get home tonight. I’ve spoiled her too much lately!”
Lu Wentian had already gone upstairs.
Entering his room, she pushed open a bookshelf that revealed a private elevator, descending all the way to the basement garage, then further down to the wine cellar on level B2.
Gu Yan leaned against the cellar wall, killing time.
She faintly heard someone coming down and didn’t expect it to be Lu Wentian; she thought it was the servant urging her to hurry.
“I’m coming soon. The wine little uncle wanted is hard to find…”
She had just finished speaking when a figure blocked her way.
Gu Yan instinctively stepped back, nearly bumping into the wine racks behind her.
Lu Wentian reached out to steady her.
She felt startled, lowered her head. “I’m fine. Please let me pass.”
Lu Wentian remained still, looking down at her.
Gu Yan felt uneasy.
“Did you get drunk last night because of Lu Ye?” the man suddenly asked.
Gu Yan frowned and finally looked up at him instinctively.
The cellar was dimly lit, especially in this corner.
“Why do you ask?” she stammered.
Lu Wentian pressed his thin lips together.
But it was obvious—he had seen Lu Ye and her entering and leaving the kitchen together earlier.
“Do you like Lu Ye?” he asked again.
Only then did Gu Yan realize his meaning: since she liked Lu Ye and claimed to have broken up with him, she was casually sleeping with men.
And that man was him.
To the proud CEO of Ruitong Investment Bank, she was insulting him.
Was she?
Gu Yan tightened her grip on the wine bottle and met his gaze squarely. “Lu Ye is my fiancé. Isn’t it normal for me to like him?”
For a long time after, the wine cellar was deathly silent.
Gu Yan felt Lu Wentian was gradually cornering her, though he appeared calm.
His deep voice was like a thousand-year-old cold pool, chilling and distant.
“If that’s the case, how dare you provoke me?”
