In Mulan’s room at the inn, Number Six carefully cut away the bandages, already soaked through with blood, revealing the split wound beneath. He frowned repeatedly as he worked the scissors.

“Your Excellency, are you certain we don’t need to send for a doctor?”

“No need. Just clean the wound and change the dressing.”

Mulan said it with the stoic confidence of a hardened soldier, though in truth he could barely feel any pain anymore. The wound had instead begun to itch and tingle with numbness.

The wound had already been stitched during the previous treatment, so there was no need to sew it up again. All that remained was to use alcohol to clean away the blood. He had asked for help simply because another person could reach certain awkward spots more easily.

What shocked Number Six even more, however, was the source of the injury. Who could have left such a terrifying wound on the body of the powerful and mysterious Lord Jonster? Judging by its appearance, it had clearly been inflicted by the bite of a nonhuman creature.

“Your Excellency, if I may be so bold—these wounds…”

Mulan glanced at him. Raising his prestige within the Dirga Empire was also essential, so after a moment’s thought, he decided not to conceal the truth.

“A few days ago, I fought a powerful Silvermane werewolf. These wounds were left behind when I killed it. They may look serious, but they are only superficial injuries. Nothing vital was damaged.”

Mulan deliberately made light of it, but he knew that as an intelligence agent of the Seventh Department, Number Six would certainly know something about the Silvermanes. At the very least, he would have heard of the Chapel’s rankings.

Sure enough, Number Six immediately wore an astonished expression.

“Lord Jonster, do you mean the Mad Biter, that terrifying werewolf from the Chapel’s Gray List?”

There was no reason for Mulan to hide it, so he openly admitted it.

“That should be the one. Sir Owen has already confirmed it. That werewolf was indeed immensely powerful. At my current level, I found the battle extremely difficult.”

Extremely difficult?

The intelligence agent known as Number Six secretly clicked his tongue.

Good heavens—he called that extremely difficult? The terrifying Silvermane Dobrich, the Mad Biter, had been killed by Lord Jonster, and afterward Lord Jonster merely remarked that the battle had been very difficult for him…

“Lord Jonster, your strength and talent are truly extraordinary. No wonder the upper echelons of the Empire hold you in such high regard. On behalf of the Seventh Department, I thank you. Thank you for avenging our brothers. Sixteen of our people once died beneath the fangs of that Silvermane beast…”

Number Six had always remained calm in Mulan’s presence, but now his face showed sincere gratitude. He used tweezers to hold a piece of alcohol-soaked cotton and carefully cleaned Mulan’s wound, continuing in as composed a voice as he could manage.

“My younger brother also died that time…”

Mulan fell silent. Only after a moment did he speak.

“You and your brother are both loyal servants of the Empire. The Empire will surely remember your achievements.”

Number Six smiled and gave a slight shake of his head.

“Thank you for the comfort, Lord Jonster. But in truth, unless someone in the Seventh Department survives long enough to be promoted and transferred, they will never appear in any record of the Empire’s achievements. Even after death, they receive no name or recognition. The only compensation is a somewhat larger pension.”

“Then rise above your station. Nameless heroes are naturally worthy of respect, but a person should still strive to achieve something exceptional and meaningful in life.”

Mulan spoke with a smile.

“In my view, the Seventh Department has quite a few elites. Many of them have probably already begun cultivating the powers of the occult system. I imagine those are methods and techniques developed within your department, though I suspect they are ultimately rather unorthodox. Perhaps I could suggest to Her Majesty that, when circumstances permit, members of the Seventh Department be allowed to audit classes at the Black Castle.”

Number Six looked up at Mulan, then immediately lowered his head. He placed the bloodstained cotton in the tray on the table, stepped back two paces, dropped to one knee, and performed the clenched-fist salute.

“Thank you for your great kindness, Lord Jonster. Your proposal is of the utmost importance to us.”

“There is no need for such a gesture. We are all serving the Empire. And as a professor, I cannot bear to see elites like you lacking a proper foundation of basic knowledge.”

It was an obvious attempt to win people over. An intelligence agent as observant as Number Six could not have failed to see that. Yet Mulan appeared completely sincere, and even if it was merely an effort to gain their loyalty, his promise was of enormous importance to the Seventh Department, where casualties were often severe.

Not long afterward, Number Six finished packing away the medical supplies and left. Mulan rose and walked to the foot of the bed, where he opened his luggage. Inside lay a Book of Radiant Knight Secret Arts.

Books of secret arts of this level were generally forbidden to be taken outside, but Mulan was an exception. He took out the book and opened it. Drawing upon the Radiant Knight’s unique magical power, he used his finger as a pen and inscribed words upon one of the blank pages near the middle.

This was the ability Mulan had developed after his powers had erupted earlier that day. Although he felt that, apart from himself—who possessed Wheel-Light—even the later successors of the Radiant Knight would find it difficult to master, it still had to be written down. It was also proof of his own talent and strength.

Besides, he could leave his name in the Book of Secret Arts and show off a little. Nor did he need to worry that later generations might question whether the ability was real simply because no one could learn it. Anything the book could record was, by definition, a genuine ability.

One could only say that the Radiant Knight, Mulan Jonster, possessed talent and power far beyond the ordinary. The secret arts he created were correspondingly difficult. Anyone who failed to reach—or even approach—his level of talent would find them almost impossible to master.

Mulan placed Wheel-Light on the table, straightened the chair with a faintly smug smile, sat down, and bent over his work. He wrote in considerable detail, describing everything from his personal sensations and the flow of magical power to the state and might displayed by the secret art.

Dimensional—Radiant Spear of Holy Light.

“Not a bad name. It seems I’m a genius at naming things!”

Mulan had already been delighted to comprehend such an ability that day. Now he felt even better about himself. Sometimes, all it took was one small thing to change a person’s mood.

“Tsk, tsk, tsk…”

After finishing the secret art he had created, Mulan looked over the abilities recorded by his predecessors during the Radiant Knight’s earlier stages. Names such as Swordlight Extension and Magical Infusion possessed an entirely different level of grandeur.

Once he had finished recording his newly comprehended secret art, Mulan stretched and began thinking about the man who had escaped. There was no doubt that he was a dangerous and troublesome figure. Mulan believed that Chrissy’s brother—the mysterious alchemist—would come looking for him before long. If he could obtain a clearer understanding of their opponent’s information and, if possible, do the siblings a favor by helping them deal with that man, it would be an excellent beginning.

“Hmm?”

Mulan suddenly voiced his confusion. He rose from his chair, draped a coat over his shoulders, and walked to the door. After listening quietly for a moment, he opened it in one swift motion.

Outside, a burly figure was kneeling before the door. He was the Avenger Chrissy had mentioned. Farolinch stood awkwardly beside the doorframe.

“Er… Lord Jonster, he insisted on coming with me…”

“Lord Mulan Jonster! I… want… to learn from you! To gain power! To gain… a human personality…”

The Avenger spoke with some difficulty, but he made every effort to articulate his words clearly.

Mulan turned toward Farolinch. This was unquestionably the old rascal’s doing.

“What did you tell him?”

“Er, well, I—I merely explained that you are a ‘professor,’ and what exactly that profession entails. He, well… may have drawn some rather deep conclusions of his own… and then he ended up like this…”

Damn. Farolinch made it sound so simple, but Mulan understood immediately. He could practically reconstruct the entire process in his mind. Farolinch might have the face of a corpse, but he was actually rather warmhearted at times. Today, he had probably encountered someone else who wanted to become a normal person, and his helpful instincts had taken over.

“You—get up and wait outside!”

“You—come inside with me!”

Mulan addressed the Avenger and Farolinch in turn, his voice stern. Farolinch entered Mulan’s room nervously, while the Avenger proved surprisingly obedient.
