Chapter 90: The Chilling Campus, Sunshine Doll (28)
Perhaps it was because everyone present was an NPC, or perhaps these children, even as they had been more than a decade ago, were born with a streak of bloodlust.
So when they saw their classmate die before their eyes in such a cruel way, fear and exhilaration mingled strangely within them.
"Next one. Keep playing."
Excited cries rose all around.
Tang Mu glanced at the situation on the board. In this round, she had to play an attack card. Only then could she expend as many cards as possible and seize the advantage.
But the key was Zi Yushu.
At present, the safest position on the board belonged to Zi Yushu. No one could play a card in this round that would let them instantly reach twenty-one and return to the first square. It had to be said that in terms of decisiveness, judgment, and reading human nature, Zi Yushu was indeed excellent.
But also dangerous.
So Tang Mu had actually wanted to play a number one card and eliminate Zi Yushu.
Unfortunately, she did not have a number one card. She only had a number four.
What a pity.
"I play four. Attack Jin Jinghan, Cliff."
Jin Jinghan stared at her in shock and confusion. "Tang Mu, I have no grudge against you. Why would you choose to attack me?"
"You killed someone." Tang Mu cast her a cool glance. Her indifferent tone made it sound like she was saying something utterly ordinary. "When Kan Xinhe died, she was pretty innocent too, wasn't she?"
Of course, there was a second reason Tang Mu wanted to kill Jin Jinghan. Jin Jinghan's identity was Black Witch. Anyone with the word witch in their role would at least have one swap card or one spell card. Eliminating the Black Witch first would make the situation much more favorable for Tang Mu later on.
Jin Jinghan clenched her teeth and still wanted to struggle a little longer.
But the teacher had already passed judgment. "Jin Jinghan, eliminated."
A chasm, so deep it seemed to reach the abyss, suddenly opened beneath her feet. Before she could even react, she plunged straight down into the earth, falling and falling and falling again.
"Aaah——"
Her scream grew fainter, deeper, and more distant.
Only when the cry had completely vanished did the thousand-foot pit beneath her finally close.
"Next. Next."
The spectators beneath the platform showed no concern at all for the disappearance of a person. They even clapped and urged the so-called clowns on the stage to perform more amusing things for them to watch.
Zi Yushu gave them a sidelong glance. Proud as he was, he naturally felt displeased.
But he did not show it.
In a situation where he was not entirely safe, the more one said, the more mistakes one made.
He played a number two card, moving from one to two and landing on square three.
Right behind Tang Mu.
Tang Mu glanced at Zi Yushu.
She had not attacked him because she did not have a number one card. But Zi Yushu not attacking her did not mean he lacked a three.
"Classmate Zi Yushu, why aren't you killing Tang Mu?" the people below the platform jeered. "Such a good opportunity... At the very least, we could see Tang Mu being 'killed' once. How can you just let it slip by?"
"Exactly. A witch has two lives to begin with. If you don't kill her, be careful she kills you instead."
Zi Yushu paid no attention to the onlookers below the stage.
Instead, he nodded at Jing You, signaling her to play.
Although Jing You was also suspicious of Zi Yushu's refusal to play the number three card, she said nothing more. She quickly played her card and hurried to fight for her own survival.
Jing You again played a nine, moving from eight to nine and landing on seventeen. She was following the example of Mao Yeyun from the previous round, trying to rush forward and break out of the attack range of those who would come after her.
But a person's hand only contained so many large-number cards. If they used them up too early, they would still be hunted down when their turn came again later.
What differed from the previous round, however, was that once Jing You reached square seventeen, no one paid her any mind at all.
Everyone felt that, for the moment, Jing You was no threat.
It was Yin Juncai's turn.
He again played a face-down empowerment card.
Yin Juncai did not attack Jing You.
But that was certainly not because he had suddenly found conscience.
Tang Mu still remembered that when the two of them had once dragged their suitcases over to ask Tang Mu for directions, Yin Juncai had been so frightened by the specters that he turned and ran, without the slightest concern for Jing You's life or death.
That meant Yin Juncai did not avoid attacking Jing You because he did not want to, but because the cards in his hand were insufficient to reach her. The sum of the two empowerment cards he had played must be between six and seventeen. Not nine, not eight, not four, five, or six, then it had to be one, two, three, or seven.
But if he only had four number cards, that meant the other cards in his hand, aside from number cards, would account for four cards.
By the next round, Yin Juncai would certainly have to use those other cards. He was not an easy opponent.
It was Zhu Zhiming's turn. He had previously played a number six card.
Now the only person ahead of him on the board was Jing You. But Jing You was on square seventeen. No matter what Zhu Zhiming played, he could not kill Jing You in this round.
So he could only play a number card.
"Five."
Zhu Zhiming moved from six to five and landed on eleven.
Tang Mu glanced at Zhu Zhiming's cards and more or less traced out his pattern. Zhu Zhiming definitely did not have any large-number cards. It was even very possible that the largest cards in his hand were only the numbers six and five. Yet he did not look panicked, which meant he also had chips besides number cards.
"Hey, this second group of yours is really dull to watch!"
The spectators below the platform were all growing displeased.
"It's just playing cards, isn't it? Do you really have to keep yielding to one another like this? You're already in the second round, and you've only eliminated two people! If none of you want to live, then give us the chance to play! Since everyone is going to die anyway, why not die faster? What's the point of dragging this out like that? Who are you trying to fool?"
"Get lost, what does this have to do with you?" Yi Hongbo said, feeling the cards in his palm as he motioned for those little brats who loved stirring up trouble to scram.
It was his turn to play, and he was thinking about how to control the situation.
He could not let those people interrupt his train of thought. If he lost the game and then lost his life, he would never spare those little ghosts!
"I play eight!"
To think Yi Hongbo would actually play an eight.
Yi Hongbo moved from five to eight and landed on thirteen.
Seeing that number, Tang Mu's heart began to tremble violently.
Because according to the number cards in her hand, nine, eight, seven, two, three, and four, their total came to thirty-three. If she wanted to reach square twenty-one and use up every card in her hand exactly, she would have to traverse two rounds, which meant forty-two squares in total.
Forty-two minus thirty-three equaled nine.
On her own strength alone, she could not complete two rounds of twenty-one. She would have to borrow someone else's power, using it to propel herself nine squares farther than she could reach by herself.
And Tang Mu was now on square four.
Yi Hongbo was on thirteen.
Thirteen minus four happened to be nine.
In other words, Tang Mu now had to use a swap card to exchange positions with Yi Hongbo.
But in the next round, Zhu Zhiming was at eleven, and odds were that the cards in his hand were mostly small-number cards as well. If he played a two, moving from eleven to two and landing on thirteen, attacking Tang Mu, then Tang Mu would definitely lose one life.
Take the risk, or sit tight and do nothing?
What a difficult choice.
