Volume I: Hell-Level Lord World Chapter 122: Gathering at Changfeng City
Longwind City was a seventh-level elven city and the mother city of most of the villages and towns in the surrounding region.
Just as Chen Gu had guessed, when the undead catastrophe first struck, Longwind City had also received an order from the Holy City to seal itself off.
The city lord at the time, however, had no way to do so.
If Longwind City sealed its gates, what would become of the villages and towns outside?
What would become of the nearly ten million elves living across this plain?
They could hardly retreat into the city and sleep while leaving all those elves outside.
Since death was inevitable, they would rather face it bravely.
Thus, when the elves of Longwind City sealed their city away, every elf—even those who had not yet come of age—took up arms.
A great battle was fought at the very place where the undead city was being built.
Fifteen million elves slew nearly fifty million undead.
A vast battlefield of death was formed there.
After achieving victory in the battle, even the undead commander could not help but marvel at the elves’ resilience. He produced a freshly transformed City Heart and established a ninth-level city upon that battlefield of death.
Over the years, some of the undead from the undead city had gone to Longwind City to investigate.
But Longwind City had already been abandoned, and there was nothing of value left inside.
After all, when Longwind City prepared to face the undead, everything within the city had been dismantled. Anything that could be made into weapons was turned into weapons, and everything useful had been put to use.
Now, apart from the empty city itself, perhaps only the City Heart remained to prove its former existence.
When the three undead heroes arrived with their troops, the city still stood desolate in the southeastern part of the plain, just as it had for the past several centuries.
“Longwind City is just ahead. Once we obtain the City Heart, we can use our troops to rebuild the city. Then we’ll send a signal to Blackfort and inform them of what happened here. Blackfort will surely remember our achievements.
“At that point, we’ll become the lords of the new city. If I become the city lord, I’ll appoint you as councilor, and you can serve as commander-in-chief of the army.”
“Councilor? Kara, have you had too much to drink? Only ninth-level cities have councils. Longwind City is merely seventh-level.”
Another undead hero spoke up. “We should hurry and take Longwind City. That army that appeared out of nowhere must be coming for the city. They attacked us only because our city blocked their path.
“That flood was extraordinarily powerful. There should be a grand water mage among them. There happens to be a river near Longwind City. If that grand water mage pursues us here, we won’t be able to escape.”
“All right, you make a good point. We’d better hurry.”
As the three undead heroes approached Longwind City, Pan was also leading the troops he had just acquired toward the city.
Along the way, Pan saw quite a few abandoned elven villages.
Those villages were completely empty, without even a ghost in sight.
Pan did notice, however, that the doors of every house in those villages and towns had been shut.
If time had not eroded everything, perhaps the places would still have looked exactly as they had hundreds of years ago, when the elves departed.
By now, Pan had already formed an impression of Longwind City’s situation.
It seemed that the undead had done little to this region over the years.
That was good news. If they had not even dealt with the outlying villages and towns, then Longwind City was likely in the same condition.
If he could capture Longwind City, Chen Gu probably would not blame him for having taken so long.
With that thought, Pan glanced at the troops behind him.
At present, he had two hundred scarecrows at his side, thirteen hundred crows flying through the sky, six hundred wild wolves running across the ground, and three thousand rats.
These were all forces he had obtained while taking control of the farms during this period.
His current army had already far exceeded his expectations. Sending such a force to capture an undefended city would be effortless.
Therefore, Pan did not think twice. He immediately led them in an assault toward the city.
It was only when Pan had drawn within one or two kilometers of Longwind City that the crows he had sent ahead to scout returned with news.
There were undead inside Longwind City, and they were in the process of taking control of it.
Pan froze when he heard this.
Where had these undead troops come from?
Hadn’t he seen no undead along the entire journey?
Where had this army come from?
Although he was puzzled, judging from the information reported by the crows, the undead force was not large.
There were death knights among them, but only four or five.
This meant that their forces were not organized into a complete system.
With that in mind, Pan remained quite confident.
He immediately issued an order.
“All crows, attack at once. Stop them from reaching the City Heart.”
After giving the order, Pan led his subordinates toward Longwind City.
At first, the undead heroes failed to notice Pan’s arrival.
But when the crows attacked the skeleton soldiers, the undead heroes reacted.
“There are enemies! Mido, go and stop them!” Kara, the leader of the undead heroes, issued the command without hesitation.
He was currently occupying the City Heart, a process that would take ten to fifteen hours.
At first, they had assumed that no one had discovered their arrival and that they could deal with everything easily.
They had never expected Pan to arrive so quickly.
“We need time. I’ll place my troops under your command as well. Hold back the enemy, and have Donad protect me.”
“Understood.”
The undead hero called Mido answered immediately.
He was a skeleton hero, but he wore thick white-bone armor, giving him the appearance of a warrior with considerable strength in direct combat.
After taking Kara’s soldiers under his command, his force grew to more than a thousand troops.
The majority were skeleton soldiers, numbering over seven hundred.
Of the remaining three hundred or so, most were walking corpses, with a smaller number of ghosts.
In addition, there were three death knights mounted on winged horses and two corpse witches.
The moment they charged out of the city, they were struck by the crows.
As the crows swooped down, the hero decisively commanded, “Raise your weapons! Thrust upward!”
Following his order, every skeleton soldier made the same movement: they raised their weapons and stabbed at the descending crows.
Regardless of whether the skeletons wielded guns or spears, the attack truly killed quite a number of crows.
At that moment, a great swarm of rats came rushing out from nearby.
Each rat was about the size of a kitten, and every one of them moved with absurd speed. As they burst forth, they pounced directly onto the undead and began tearing into them with savage determination.
Before long, the bodies of the outermost skeleton soldiers had been gnawed into fragments.
