Lu Wenchuan had no idea what the Sang couple wanted to say. Seeing Sang Yijia's questioning look, he could only silently shake his head.

Sang Zheng grew even more irritated after noticing the subtle exchange between the two young people, and he too had no clue what his wife intended to say.

"It's like this," Sang's mother began.

Sang Yijia looked seriously at her mother. "Mom, Dad, what exactly is it you want to say?"

"Uncle, Auntie, if there's anything you'd like to ask, you can direct your questions to me," Lu Wenchuan said, vaguely sensing what the Sang couple were getting at.

Sang's mother shook her head and continued, "It's actually nothing major."

"?" Sang Yijia grew even more curious.

Sang's mother looked at her daughter and said, "It's like this, Jiajia. Do you still remember what happened ten years ago?"

"Something from ten years ago?" Sang Yijia hesitated for a moment, then turned to look at Lu Wenchuan, then at Sang Zheng and her mother. After a pause, she said, "Mom, Dad, are you referring to the kidnapping incident?"

"Jiajia, you remember it all?" Sang Zheng's eyes widened. "When did you regain those memories?"

Sang Yijia touched the tip of her nose. "It was during the time I was unconscious yesterday. All my childhood memories came back."

Sang Zheng shot Lu Wenchuan a glare, his eyes seemingly saying, "This is all your fault."

Knowing he was in the wrong, Lu Wenchuan said nothing and silently accepted Sang Zheng's stare.

"Ah, I see." Sang's mother had assumed Sang Yijia still hadn't remembered and was about to help jog her memory. Now that she'd recalled everything, Sang's mother felt a sense of relief.

"I'd previously gone to ask the attending physician about the cause of your coma," Sang's mother continued. "At first, I thought it might be related to that childhood memory. If you kept spending time with Lu Wenchuan, you might remember things, get triggered, and that's why you fell unconscious."

Sang Yijia scratched her head. "Mom, Dad, that's actually not the case."

"My coma has nothing to do with that incident." As for why she had fallen unconscious, Sang Yijia couldn't explain it either. "The doctor says there's nothing wrong with my health now, so can we just let this matter go?"

Sang Yijia looked at Sang Zheng and her mother with hopeful eyes.

Sang Zheng let out a cold snort. "Whatever you say goes, I suppose."

"Thanks, Dad." Sang Yijia called out sweetly, then turned her gaze to her mother.

"I feel the same way as your father." Sang's mother placed her hand over Sang Yijia's. "Whatever you say goes."

"Thanks, Mom." Sang Yijia breathed a silent sigh of relief, then was about to bring up her work arrangements, but seeing Lu Wenchuan there, she paused and looked up at him.

Before Sang Yijia could speak, Sang Qiwu returned carrying four chairs. "Mom, Dad, I'm back."

"I just stopped by Third Brother's office. He's got a surgery scheduled here today, so I'm afraid he won't have time to come see little sister."

Sang Qiwu set down the chairs, then, recalling something, added, "I heard some doctor came over in the early hours today. They'll be coming by later to give little sister a full-body check-up."

"Uncle, Auntie, I was the one who arranged the doctor." Sensing three pairs of eyes on him, Lu Wenchuan explained, then looked at Sang Yijia. "The examination should be ready to go shortly."

"Alright." Sang Yijia never would have expected Lu Wenchuan to have called in a doctor — it genuinely took her by surprise. But then, thinking back to what happened ten years ago, she realized he must still carry guilt toward her. She sighed inwardly and looked at Lu Wenchuan with complete sincerity. "Thank you."

"You're welcome." Lu Wenchuan shook his head, lifted his wrist to check the time, and said, "You all go ahead and talk. I still have things to attend to, so I'll head off."

"Alright." Sang's mother asked Sang Qiwu to see Lu Wenchuan out.

After Lu Wenchuan left, Sang Zheng let out a huff. Sang Yijia found it baffling, so she turned to her mother and asked, "Mom, what's wrong with Dad?"

"It's all because you went on that dating variety show." Sang's mother glanced at the pork and preserved egg congee Lu Wenchuan had brought, immediately recognizing it as the work of the hotel's head chef. "Here, have some of the one I made for you instead."

She took Sang Yijia's bowl and handed her a freshly filled one. "This is made with lean pork bought this morning and fresh preserved eggs."

"Thanks, Mom." Sang Yijia took a sip of the congee without noticing any difference. "Mom, earlier you said it was about my work. What did you mean?"

"Your father doesn't want you dating Lu Wenchuan." Sang's mother spoke plainly, then asked, "Sweetheart, what are your true feelings toward Lu Wenchuan?"

"I don't really have any." Sang Yijia understood what this was about right away. She thought back to how Lu Wenchuan had been treating her these past few days, knit her brows, and let out a soft "Mm." "I'm not sure myself."

"What's there to be unsure about?" Sang's mother chuckled. "Though it's fine if you can't figure it out right now. It'll come clear to you eventually."

"Why bother figuring anything out so clearly?" Sang Zheng snorted coldly. "Don't you forget what Lu Wenchuan promised us back then. He's the one who broke his word first, and now he wants to date my daughter? What is he thinking?"

Sang Zheng figured they might as well go home and eat more kohlrabi — at least that would be good for some daydreaming.

"???" Sang Yijia tilted her head and blinked. "Dad, what was it exactly that Lu Wenchuan promised our family back then?"

Sang Zheng froze. He hadn't expected to be the one to blurt it out, and he fell silent immediately.

Sang's mother shook her head with a smile. "It's nothing much."

"Back then, after you and Lu Wenchuan were rescued, you had lost all memory of that period. We were worried you might remember things if you saw him, so we told him not to come visit you." Sang's mother explained, then asked, "Jiajia, do you blame us?"

"No, I don't." Sang Yijia shook her head. "I know you and Dad did everything for my sake, so blame isn't even a question."

Sang Zheng let out a subtle sigh of relief, then coughed. "To be honest, after all these years, it's not like I absolutely refuse to let Lu Wenchuan see you."

"But he can't just show up out of nowhere to join some variety show without saying a word." Sang Zheng wanted to come across as magnanimous in front of his daughter, yet remembering how Lu Wenchuan felt about her, he couldn't resist painting the young man in a less favorable light. "And another thing — he knew full well we were coming today, but he still came running over early in the morning. What's that supposed to mean?"

He spoke with obvious displeasure, then cast a covert glance at Sang Yijia, hoping to earn her agreement.

Sang Yijia let out an "Ah." "Maybe it's because he knew I slept too much yesterday and wanted to bring me breakfast early?"

Sang's mother paused, then couldn't help but laugh. "Yes, yes, whatever Jiajia says is right."

Sang Zheng, however, felt a lump in his chest.
